RTYC National 12 Open January 6th 2008
The Twelves’
first meeting of the year took place on the tidal reach of
the Thames at Ranelagh SC on Sunday 6th January –
a single race for the venerable Royal Thames YC Trophy.
In a pleasant easterly force 2 with a wintry sun glinting
off the water, nine Twelves were on the line. The fleet was
led away by Chris Edwards, who first won the trophy in 1972,
up river past the Fulham football ground on the last of the
flood tide. Antony Gifford & Juliet Brown led around the
first mark but found a wind hole, allowing Graham Camm and
Clare Hunter to briefly assume the lead. Camm and Hunter
found a significantly larger hole soon after, allowing
Gifford & Brown and John & Mandy Thornton to slip past and
pull out a good lead on the first beat back. They completed
the first lap three minutes ahead of Camm & Hunter.
As the Thorntons made their overtaking move to windward, a
luff from Gifford & Brown led to contact and turns, pushing
the Thorntons back to third place. Over the second and
third laps, Camm & Hunter gradually pulled closer but
Gifford & Brown sailed consistently to win, with just 40
seconds separating the first three. Chris Edwards and Beth
Reilly were fourth. The race was followed by a celebration
lunch and prizegiving for the Thames Area Series for 2007,
won by Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne.

Royal Thames Trophy at Ranelagh
Ten N12s took to the water at Ranelagh to compete for the Royal
Thames Yacht Club trophy. With the Thames barrier firmly shut, the
fleet had to adjust their normal tidal tactics and there wasn't the
normal struggle to stay the right side of the start line before the
start. Bim Daser got the best start on the Fulham FC side of the
river, starting in more wind but running the risk of having to tack
to make the corner. Mike Storey led the middle of the river but
unfortunately was over the line and had to restart. Graham Camm &
Zoe Ballantyne were first to the corner but ran into a hole. The
fleet compressed as a large gust came from behind and David Wilkins
and Adele Cameron attempted to take the lead in the first of
numerous luffing battles.
Graham & Zoe managed to stay ahead and round the mark in first
but there was no chance of them having an easy ride. On the way back
to Putney Bridge, Graham & Zoe fell into a hole. Jon Ibbotson & Lucy
Horsley spotted their chance and made the second leadership
challenge but fell into a hole of their own before they could
consolidate their position. John & Mandy Thornton, out for the first
time in their newly acquired Final Chapter, found a fantastic burst
of speed half way through the race and stormed through the fleet to
challenge for first, nipping at Graham & Zoe's heels. Many luffing
battles ensued during the next two laps as John & Mandy attempted to
capture the lead. There were also a few hairy moments as the fleet
fought with some big gusts and massive wind shifts. After one and a
half hours the race was shortened with Graham & Zoe just holding on
to the lead from John & Mandy.

With England's World Cup game scheduled for an afternoon kick-off, just
5 Twelves came to the line for the Ranelagh Summer Meeting on 25th June.
Ranelagh, with not much wind and the tide running fast, is the only
place where it definitely pays to be facing the wrong way at the gun.
All boats just managed to stay the right side and then headed off
together up river and down tide to the first mark way past the Fulham
football ground. Three loops on that reach of the river were set, with a
return back to the club expected at high tide. Fran Gifford and Sophie
Mackley were first round, followed by Dave Wilkins and Adele Cameron,
and Chris and Alison Edwards. As Fran and Sophie gradually pulled away,
Mike Day and Anne Murch came through to third and then second when Dave
and Adele hit the uptide mark not once but twice in quick succession.
On the way back to the club line, Fran and Sophie held on through the
dead patches and large shifts to win, while Dave and Adele made a strong
comeback to get through to second by the line.

The bitterly cold
northerlies forecast for the following few days would have been welcome at
Ranelagh where a minimal south-westerly dropped to virtually nothing soon after
the start. The fleet, with entries from 5 clubs, were swept to the "Crabtree"
mark on the tide, gybed and then, close hauled on starboard, battled to stem the
tide which still had 2 hours to go to high water! Kedges were used judiciously
but the four who were to finish at the top slowly edged out an advantage which
was to prove significant when the tide turned.
Patience and committement were the by-words and, as the tide eased and then
turned, the early efforts were rewarded. The few feet gained against the tide
became yards, became boat lengths, became winning margins. The previous year's
winner, Graham Camm, crewed by Zoe Ballantyne, drew away to repeat his sucess
followed by Will and Arthur Henderson, and John Thornton crewed by Lindsey Iles.
Not only had the tide turned but dusk had fallen. The finishing boats were
greeted by the joyious ringing of the bell and were floodlit by a searchlight
beaming across the Thames. The prizes were presented by the Rear Commodore of
the Royal Thames Yacht Club, Jack Edwards.

Trophy @ Ranelagh Sailing Club on 19th Jan 2003

A
small but select band group of National 12 sailors, including current and past
National Champions, and current and past Thames Area champions, turned out for
the first event in the 2003 Thames Area, the Royal Thames Yacht Club Trophy,
held at Ranelagh Sailing Club on
Putney Embankment in London on Sunday 19th January.
In
a lull between the forecast gales, the fleet got away on a balmy afternoon
in bright sunshine and a gentle F1-2 on a traditional starboard hand
sausage course with legs of approximately a mile. Bim Daser and Katy Meadowcroft
in 'Feeling Foolish' were anything but, acing the reaching start, but were
quickly overhauled by current National Champions Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne
in 'Thanks For All the Fish'. Five boats arrived at the first mark pretty much
together with 'Fish' leading away followed by 'Foolish' and then Chris Edwards
and Rachel Wilkey in 'Queen of Puddings' in close pursuit. The return leg was
mostly on starboard, close to the bank to avoid the incoming tide, however
getting too close could be your undoing as in the shifting winds a costly tack
was sometimes necessary to get away from the shore. On the long fetch back
'Puddings' got through 'Foolish' however the leading three remained close until
close to the turning mark where the vagaries of the wind allowed the gaps to
open up.
On
the fetch of the second lap 'Foolish' retook second place from 'Puddings' in a bit of
tacking and were able to stretch away to pursue 'Fish' who had opened up a good
lead. On the following lap, 'Foolish' halved the time deficit to 'Fish ' but
were unable to continue the chase as the race was shortened after an hour and a half's
racing. 'Puddings' came in third, but a great race was going on for fourth with
long time fourth place boat 'Flying Saucer' steered by Nigel Edwards and Richard
Tolkien getting overhauled by David Kenyon and Benn Robins in 'Cheshire Cat' on
the last leg.
